Blue Screen of Death: A Survival Guide for When Your PC Throws a Tantrum!

If you’re a Windows user, you might have encountered the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).
A system error causes your computer to crash and stop working. The good news is, it’s usually not the end of the world for your PC.
Here are some practical steps you can take to resolve this issue.

Understanding the Blue Screen of Death

The Blue Screen of Death indicates a system crash, where the operating system has reached a critical condition where it cannot operate safely. The issues causing BSOD can range from hardware failure, a problem with a device driver, or the unexpected termination of a crucial process or thread.

Step 1: Unplug USB Devices

One of the first steps to fix a Windows BSOD is to shut down the PC that showed the BSOD. Disconnect all USB devices except for the mouse and keyboard. Some external devices could cause compatibility issues leading to the BSOD.

Step 2: Boot in Safe Mode

Reboot the system in Safe Mode. Safe Mode starts your PC with a minimal set of drivers and services. If the BSOD does not occur in Safe Mode, the error is likely related to a driver or software.

Step 3: Use Built-in Troubleshooting Tools

In Windows, open the Get Help app and type “Troubleshoot BSOD error”. Follow the guided walkthrough in the Get Help app. This tool can diagnose and fix common issues causing the BSOD.

Step 4: Update Your Software

Ensure all your software, including your operating system, is up to date. Often, updating your software can fix compatibility issues that lead to a BSOD.

Step 5: Check for Hard Drive Errors

Problematic drive errors can also cause a BSOD. Use built-in Windows tools like CHKDSK to check and repair problematic drive errors.

Step 6: Remove Non-Essential Peripherals

Non-essential peripherals could be causing the BSOD. Try removing these peripherals and see if the BSOD still occurs.

Step 7: Use System Restore

If all else fails, type “recovery” into the Start menu and open the Recovery Control Panel entry that appears. Here, click Open System Restore to launch the tool.
